6 steps to build your first WordPress site

WordPress has made it very easy for everyone to build a website even by themselves. Here is a step by step guide on how to build your first WordPress site.

1. Registering hosting and domain name

You can set up a separate domain name or choose a free host. Setting up a separate domain name is more professional. Most companies provide hosting and domain registration in one place. Hosting requires PHP version 4.3 or more and MySQL version 4.1.2 or more running on the server.

2. Downloading the WordPress

You need to download the WordPress software. After downloading, save it on your hard drive and unzip the files. Download the latest version of the software

3. Adding information

Look for wp-config-sample.php in the WordPress files. Rename it to wp-config.php and open it in any text editor. Here, you will have to fill in the details of your database. Login to your hosting panel and look for MySql section. Create a new database and save the information on file.

4. Uploading files to your server

Login to your hosting panel and look for FTP accounts. Create new user and write down the information: FTP name, user and password. Go to http://www.coreftp.com/ and download the FTP client. Install it, add a new account and connect it to your server with FTP information. Then upload the WordPress files to the server.

5. Installing the WordPress

After you have uploaded the files, install the WordPress. Open the browser and go to www.mywebsitename.com/wp-admin/install .php. After installation, you will be given a login name and a password.

6. Choosing the design theme

Now you should see your website at www.mywebsitename.com. You can now change the default design theme of your site.

7. Accessing your blog admin area

In order to login to the website admin area, you must go to www.mywebsitename.com/wp-admin/ and enter your login and password. You will enter the main page of the WordPress content management system. On the left hand side of the main management menu, there are lots of settings to play around.

That’s it! Your first website is up and running online. Now you can change your theme, settings and other features the way you like.
